:: Recipes for Lazy Bum ::

It was the usual kinda Saturday - wake up late, hot neslo for breakfast, chilling on the couch, byebye hubby, doing chores, watching tv and surfing internet. Saturday is a day with myself as hubby is out to work. Normally I prefer spending my Saturday at home cuz I can laze around, procrastinate and do chores when I really feel like doing it. Since I am home alone and although I now have a cat as a companion, I don't care much about what I'm gonna eat for lunch. Sometimes I do remind myself to get a loaf of bread a day before or else just eat whatever is there in the kitchen like instant noodle. Lazy me, huh?

My most favourite and frequent food cooked for Saturday's lunch is baked potato cuz it's yummy, can make my stomach full with only one portion and most importantly, easy to prepare. Here's the recipe to the easiest, yet impressive dish for a lazy bum like me.

Easy Peasy Baked Potato

What you need:
  • 1 russet potato
  • Butter
  • 1 slice cheddar cheese (*optional)
What to do:
  1. Wash the potato with its skin and using a fork, make holes all around it.
  2. Cook for 5 minutes at a high level in the microwave or if your microwave has an auto cook option for baked potato like mine just use that one... easier!
  3. When it is done, slice the potato in the middle and spread butter. The butter will melts immediately due to the heat (yummy~!)
  4. Ready to be served. If you like cheese, I would recommend adding a slice of cheddar cheese like Kraft's Singles, tear into smaller pieces after the butter as it will also melts together in the middle of the potato. From my experience, cheddar cheese slice tastes yummier and milkier than grated one.
  5. Eat it with your own choice of toppings like baked beans, sour cream, tuna, etc.

Due to Hari Raya hols, I have not restock my russet potato. I don't want to eat instant noodle cuz I just had mee goreng Sedap last nite so I'm out of idea. Well, there are meat and eggs if I want to cook rice, but cooking for one person is not worth it. I had cream crackers dipped in my neslo for breakfast so I thought another round of cream crackers for a late lunch won't harm. With a lil' twist, I made myself a hors d'oeuvres with instant mushroom soup without main course and dessert. So here is another idea for a lazy bum - hors d'oeuvres for lunch and tea (had this at 5 something in the evening btw and that explains the pot of tea):

I only put olives because that is the only suitable ingredient available. Believe me, they are tasty and it would have been better if I can topped 'em with shrimp, tuna and salad. Well, I may remake it again but next time for a real starter, not lunch.

Basic Hors D'oeuvres

What you need:
  • Cream crackers (I recommend Hup Seng's cuz they are milky)
  • Cheddar cheese slices
  • Toppings of your choice
What to do:
  1. Slice the cheddar cheese into 4 and put each onto one cream cracker.
  2. Top with anything you like such as tuna, salad, tomato, shrimp, salmon or caviar if you have 'em.
  3. Ready to be served.

:: Colourful Spring/Summer 2011 ::

Get ready folks for a fun, cheerful season in fashion. Famous names have revealed their lines for next Spring/Summer 2011 and apart from dash of earthy colours, used of strong, vibrant colours also topped the list. Here are some ideas on what to be expected:

From Bottega Venetta's closet -

Splash of colours for men from Prada's closet -

Fendi and Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2011 handbags for grab -

For fashionistas who intend to be ahead above the rest, here's a good news to all of you as Burberry is offering pre-order for their Spring/Summer 2011 collection online, as seen in London Fashion Week on 21 September 2010. It's the first time ever that a brand allows customers to get what was shown in their recent fashion show and another best things is, the item will be delivered to you in the next 7 weeks. Check their official website to feist your eyes, make a purchase and be the first in town (or in this country!) to own something that is definitely a hit in next few months, but hurry cuz the offer only opens until 28 September 2010.

Well, I'm indeed a 'colours-lover' so I'm definitely into next season's trend. I hardly interested in Fendi's handbags except for their spy bag but I think the shape and size of the hand satchel (3rd pic from left) suits me perfectly well. Okey, let us all get ready for the colourful season - raid the closet for bright clothes and accessories, yeah!

:: UPSR Days ::

Today is a BIG day for all 12-years old kids. It's exam time, the biggest and important event so far in their lives. Stress? Nervous? No worries, that's normal and this is only the beginning as you are going through similar phases in your life later.

I can still remember myself, vaguely, taking the exam 17 years ago. Wow, that long ahh? If I have a child in that year, she's already in Form 5 today. Anyway, took my UPSR in Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan King George V (KGV), Ampangan, Seremban where I spent 6 years of my early learning childhood. The exam took place in joint classrooms turned into hall and I was seated somewhere in the middle. One thing that me and my bestfriend back then, Riza really looked forward to during exams was deciding on bags that we gonna carry during exam day. As we already know, we have to carry bulky, heavy school bags everyday but during exams there were not much to bring so we can carry cute, smaller bags instead. Well, consider that as some sort of motivation although bags were not allowed in exam hall.

As usual the exam (and any other exams) started with BM paper. I think it was BM Paper 1. I didn't remember much on that but I knew BM Paper 2 was the toughest because we need to write essays. I think English was ok too but I still remember that I was very confident with Math. I went to toilet during that paper because I got extra free time even after checking the whole answers. Besides the 4 subject papers, we were also required to answer IQ test paper which was important if you want to be selected for boarding school. Couldn't remember how many days were taken, but obviously there was a huge relief when the exam was over. M.E.R.D.E.K.A~! Time spent in class after the exam was only for fun, playing board games and any other games as well as craft projects.

I spent the night in school since the day before the result was out as I was attending a school camp. I was very happy and proud to see my result. It was 4A, the biggest achievement so far in my life (that time). As promised by my parents, my wishes were granted. Got a pair of pink-white L.A Gear sneakers and Garfield items (I was crazy for Garfield that time) from my dad and a trip to Sarawak from my mom. My IQ test mark must be higher than expected too cuz I was selected to a boarding school in JB, where I spent the next 3 years of teenhood there.

Well, my time has passed and it's time for the current 12-years old to shine. Just do your best and relax. Whatever it is, just remember about your parents and your teachers who have high hopes for you. Good luck and go break your legs~!

p/s: A principal called radio this morning and shared what he heard from a teacher who adviced and gave last words to his year 6 students before school ended yesterday - "Do not watch TV, do not read about Datuk Sosilawati murder and do not read about social problems in the newspapers." (hrmmm... interesting.)

:: Basic Kaftan Dress Tutorial ::

this year i didn't have the urge to shop for raya. until a week left of ramadhan, only bought 2 raya cookies during lelong (rm25 for 2) for my hometown in seremban, a 3.5 meters black satin crepe fabric and a three tone silk shawl. yeap, believe it or not that was all i bought for this year's raya. no ready made kurung / kebaya, no new shoes, no new casual outfits, no new handbag and even no raya cookies for our own home, nothing~!

despite that, on raya morning i was still one happy, proud lady because i was wearing my own handmade kaftan dress. that explains the 3.5 meters black satin crepe fabric, which i bought exactly 4 days before raya. i believe many ladies aware that kaftan dress is 'in' since last year. among the hits for this year's raya were kaftans by rizman ruzaini for their eid-ul-fitr collection and even worn by siti nurhaliza. they were adorable and pretty and no doubt, hefty in price too (price starts at rm2000 and above). even if the dress are not by designers, they are still surprisingly pricey. for an ordinary person like me, to own one is to produce one. hence, i decided to sew my own kaftan dress for hari raya. moreover, from observation making a simple kaftan is simple because you only need to sew straight lines at left and right of the fabric.

STEP 1 - see yourself in a kaftan dress
before the project begun, it is advisable to see how you look in a kaftan dress. i dragged bff to metrojaya to see myself because i didn't want to waste time and $$ if it doesn't suit me.

STEP 2 - buy 3.5 meters fabric
i chose a plain satin crepe because it is shiny, heavy and non-transparent. chiffon and normal crepe are also suitable but you'll need to wear inner because they are transparent. it's up to you to decide.

STEP 3 - fold the fabric and measure with your height. snip off the remaining.

STEP 4 - fold the fabric in the middle. iron to mark. this is crucial to make balance body sides and also for the neck hole.

STEP 5 - measure body width. i used my baju kurung as a template and mark the fabric accordingly.

STEP 6 - by folding the fabric in the middle, cut the bottom edges in slight curve. then, cut for neck hole and sew. you can opt for round neck or v-neck but i went for baju kurung neck.

STEP 7 - sew sides of the body.

STEP 8 - i made sleeves and add sponge padding on shoulders for my dress. this is optional though and if you don't need any sleeve or padding then your dress is actually done. just end it up with finishing stitches along sides of the fabric (jahit tepi). i sent my dress for 'jahit tepi' for only RM3 at seremban and it transformed the whole thing into a real dress. well, before that it looked like a large piece of fabric.

STEP 9 - use your creativity to decorate the dress with embellishment like beads, sequins, lace, etc. once it is done, voila~! you'll be as happy as me...

i would say you'll need 2 full days to complete a dress if you're not a pro like me. one day to sew and hem the dress and another day to decorate it with beads. surprise, surprise, cost for the whole thing is nearly RM100 depending on the fabric and decorations so you could save the extra hundreds $$ for matching shawl, handbag or shoe. it's totally worth it~!

roughly, expenditure for the above dress are:
  • fabric - RM68.25
  • sponge pads - RM2.50 / pair
  • black thread - RM0.80
  • 'jahit tepi' - RM3
  • chunky beads - RM15
  • TOTAL - RM89.55
here is a simple diagram for reference:

p/s: buzz me if you wanna know tips to make the dress fits according to your curve.
